Undergraduate Mathematics Day | 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM

Predicting just how high unemployment in the U.S. will go and when it will peak can seem like more of an art than a science, but that's just one of the issues college students will tackle this weekend at the University of Dayton's Undergraduate Mathematics Day.

Fall Math Events 2009 celebrates math in all forms — research, learning, teaching, history — and provides an opportunity for student mathematicians to meet and network with more established mathematicians, according to University of Dayton math professor Paul Eloe.

A University of Oregon student will present at 11:40 a.m. her model for predicting the timing of future unemployment peaks and 25-year projections of future unemployment rate scenarios. It is just one of 23 scheduled presentations from local university students on the practical use of mathematics, which include understanding the physics of physical abuse, the benefits of using an ancient calculator in the classroom and understanding how economic shocks interact with each other in a financial crisis.

"The conference focuses on the undergraduate student, but high school students, master's level students and educators are welcome to attend," Eloe said. "We especially welcome anyone interested in the STEM fields, as the conference addresses a broad range of applications in mathematics."

The conference also includes lectures from two established researchers in the fields of math and statistics.

Thomas Santner will deliver the annual Kenneth C. Schraut Memorial Lecture. The statistics professor at The Ohio State University will discuss the use of computers in statistical experiments. Kristin Duncan, San Diego State University professor in the department of mathematics and statistics, will deliver a lecture reviewing Bayes' theorem and how it can be used in applications such as analyzing criminal evidence.

The conference is free, but registration is requested. For more information, visit http://academic.udayton.edu/MathEvents/Fall09.

The University of Dayton department of mathematics is sponsoring the event.
Location: Science Center
Cost: Free, but registration is requested.
